Founded in March 1968, the Saint Bernard Club of San Diego began with a simple idea: bring together people who shared a deep admiration for this gentle giant of a breed. A small group of enthusiasts gathered for their very first meeting in Dr. J. E. Overmire’s office, where they paid their dues, drafted a constitution, and set the foundation for a community that would thrive for decades.
From the very beginning, the Club was guided by a clear mission:
To encourage responsible ownership, breeding, training, and showing of purebred Saint Bernards
To host specialty shows, matches, and obedience trials
To foster friendship, support, and good sportsmanship among Saint Bernard lovers
Just a few months later, in May 1968, members hosted a potluck dinner to raise funds for their first event. It was a true reflection of the Club’s community spirit. That effort paid off on June 16, 1968, when the Club held its very first match, featuring 47 Saint Bernards and judged by Mr. O. M. Capodice.
As interest grew, so did the Club’s ambitions. After hosting several successful practice matches, the Club earned approval in 1970 to hold sanctioned events. By 1975, they reached an exciting milestone: official approval from the AKC to host their very first Specialty Show. The following year, the tradition continued with another show, held alongside the Silver Bay Kennel Club Show, an event that became a long-standing favorite.
While shows and competitions have always been an important part of the Club, they are only one piece of the story. Education, connection, and community have remained at its heart. In the early years, members gathered monthly at the Linda Vista Recreation Center in San Diego to enjoy guest speakers and engaging programs.
Today, the Club continues that tradition of connection in a modern way through online meetings that keep members engaged no matter where they are. To stay involved and informed, be sure to keep your contact information up to date using our Contact page.
From its humble beginnings to today, the Saint Bernard Club of San Diego remains a welcoming home for anyone who shares a love for this remarkable breed.
